How to Buy Jewelry as a Gift Without Knowing Their Size
October 6, 2026
You want to give jewelry. You do not know their ring size, their wrist measurement, or their chain length, and you cannot ask without ruining the surprise. The simplest fix is to choose a piece where size is not part of the purchase at all: stud earrings have no fit size, and pendants come in one size. Bracelets come down to a choice between 7 and 8 inches, which is a coin flip you can usually win. Rings are the only category where guessing wrong is likely.
That is the whole answer, and the rest of this guide is how to act on it — which categories carry real risk, how to narrow a ring size without asking, what to look at instead of size, and what happens if you get it wrong anyway.
The four categories, ranked by how much size actually matters

Earrings: nothing to get wrong
Studs are the safest jewelry gift there is, and the reason is structural rather than stylistic. A pair of studs has no circumference, no length and no fit. At Jamilah Jewels, earring listings offer a finish choice — sterling silver, gold-plated, rose gold-plated — and nothing else. There is no size dropdown to get wrong.
There is still a visual size decision, and it is worth a minute of thought. A 9mm cluster reads as an everyday earring; a 12mm reads as a statement. That is about how bold the piece looks on the ear, not whether it fits, so getting it "wrong" means the earring is a little louder or quieter than they would have chosen — not unwearable. If you want to think it through, our two-minute method for choosing earring size and the 9mm versus 12mm comparison both cover it.
One practical note for a gift: check the backing. The 9mm Luxurious Cluster Earrings use screw-back posts, which hold considerably better than push-backs for a heavier stud. If the person you are buying for has lost an earring before, that detail matters more than the stone. We go into it properly in screw backs versus push backs.
Pendants: one size, but the chain is a second decision
A pendant itself has no size. The 'Guided Path' Classic Star Pendant is a single sterling silver piece — a .925 base with a rhodium finish, set with VVS moissanite round-cut and baguette lab stones. There is no variant to choose beyond the piece itself.
What does need a decision is the chain. Some of our pendant listings include a chain and say so clearly on the product page; where they do not, the pendant pairs with any of our tennis or Cuban chains, which is a separate purchase. Chain length is the one number you are choosing, and it is far more forgiving than a ring size: an 18-inch chain sits at the collarbone and a 20-inch sits just below it, and most people are comfortable in either. What chain to wear with a pendant walks through the pairing, and our tennis chain sizing guide covers the length question on its own.
If you want a complete gift in one box without the chain question, a pendant is still fine — just buy it knowing they may already own a chain they prefer it on.
Bracelets: a two-option choice, and one option is usually right
Our bracelets come in 7 inch and 8 inch. That is it — two lengths, not twelve. Which means a bracelet is not really a guess so much as a single judgment call, and the odds are good: 7 inch suits most women's wrists and 8 inch suits most men's and anyone with a larger frame.
If you can get a look at their wrist, or you have ever held their hand, you probably already know which side of that line they fall on. If you want to be more careful than that, how to measure a wrist for a bracelet explains the method, including how to read a bracelet they already own without removing it from the drawer.

The 'True Hive' Patterned Design Bracelet and the 4mm Tennis Bracelet with Round-Cut Lab Stone are both stocked in 7 and 8 inch, so the choice is live rather than theoretical.
Rings: the only category where guessing is genuinely risky
A ring is the gift everyone wants to give and the one most likely to come back. Our rings are offered in size 7 and size 8, so the odds are better here than at a jeweler carrying half sizes from 4 to 13 — but a ring that does not fit cannot be worn at all, which is a different kind of wrong from an earring that is slightly bigger than they would have picked.
Our honest advice: unless you are confident about the size, do not make a ring the surprise. Make it the thing you choose together. Browse the rings collection with them, or give a piece from another category now and plan the ring for when you know the number.
How to find their ring size without asking
If you are set on a ring, there are three reliable ways to get the number without raising suspicion:
- Borrow a ring they already wear. Take one from a drawer — not one they wear daily, or they will notice it gone — and measure its inside diameter. Our guide to measuring ring size at home explains how to convert that into a size.
- Trace it. If you cannot take the ring with you, press it onto paper and draw around the inside edge. A tracing is less precise than a measurement but it will usually get you to the right size.
- Ask someone who can ask. A sibling, a close friend or a parent can raise the subject in a way you cannot. This is the method most likely to produce an accurate answer and the least likely to spoil anything.
What we would avoid is guessing from how their hands look. Finger size does not track height, build or hand size closely enough to be useful, and a confident guess is still a guess.
What to look at instead of size
Once you have taken size off the table, the things that actually decide whether the gift lands are the ones people tend to skip over.
- Metal and finish. Look at what they already wear. Someone whose jewelry is all silver-toned will not suddenly switch to gold because you bought gold. Our pieces are built on genuine .925 sterling silver, with gold and rose gold finishes plated over that same silver base — so the finish is a look, not a different material. What .925 sterling silver actually means covers the base metal, and does gold plating wear off covers what to expect from the plated finishes over time.
- Sensitive ears. If you are buying earrings and you know they react to cheap metal, this is worth checking rather than hoping. Is sterling silver hypoallergenic is the honest version of that answer.
- How loud they wear things. This is the one most gift-buyers get wrong in the same direction: they buy bigger than the person would buy for themselves. If their current jewelry is small and plain, a small and plain piece is not a boring gift. It is a gift they will wear.
- What the stones are. All of our pieces are set with lab-grown moissanite, which is its own gemstone rather than a diamond — it is a different mineral with its own optical character, and we are straightforward about that. If you would like to be able to answer the question when they ask, moissanite versus diamond and what VVS moissanite means are the two to read.
If the size is wrong anyway
This is the part that should settle your nerves, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.
Jamilah Jewels accepts returns within 30 days of purchase on pieces that come back unworn, unused and in their original packaging with all included materials, with proof of purchase. Returns have to be approved before they are sent back, and once approved we cover return shipping with a prepaid label. Refunds are issued to the original payment method within 10 business days of approval; original shipping fees are not refundable.
Two things to flag because they affect gifts specifically. There is no one-step size swap: an exchange means returning the piece and placing a new order once the return is approved, so if a bracelet arrives in the wrong length, build in a little time. And custom or personalized pieces cannot be returned, which is the real argument against making a custom piece your first gift to someone whose size you do not know. Gift picks that need no size
Everything below is in stock and carries no fit decision at all.
- Under $150. The 'Luxe Clover' Timeless Earrings at $100 and the Timeless Heart Pavé Earrings at $120 are the two easiest first gifts in the catalog — small, plain enough to wear with anything, and available in more than one finish.
- Around $150. The Timeless Clover Elegance Stud Earrings and the Elegant Snowflake Starburst Earrings both sit at $150 and read as a little more considered than a plain stud.
- Around $200. The Butterfly Baguette Luxury Pendant at $200 is the pick if earrings feel too safe, with the chain caveat above.
- Statement, still no size. The 12mm Luxurious Cluster Earrings at $170 are the larger version of the everyday cluster, for someone who you know wears bold jewelry.
For more by budget and by recipient, our moissanite gift guide and the full list of gifts under $200 both go wider than this page does.
Frequently asked questions
What jewelry can I buy as a gift without knowing any size?
Stud earrings and pendants. Neither has a fit size — earrings offer a finish choice and pendants come as a single piece — so there is no measurement to get wrong. Bracelets are nearly as safe, because the choice is only between 7 and 8 inches.
Is it a bad idea to give a ring if I do not know their size?
It is the riskiest category, because a ring that does not fit cannot be worn at all. Our rings come in size 7 and size 8, which narrows it, but if you are not confident we would rather you chose the ring together or gave something from another category and planned the ring for later.
Are 7 inch or 8 inch bracelets more common?
7 inch suits most women's wrists and 8 inch suits most men's and anyone with a larger build. If you have a look at a bracelet they already own, measuring a wrist for a bracelet explains how to read it without taking it anywhere.
Does a pendant come with a chain?
Some of our pendant listings include a chain and say so on the product page. Where a listing does not, the pendant is sold on its own and pairs with any of our tennis or Cuban chains. Check the product options before you assume it is one complete gift.
Can I exchange a gift for a different size?
Yes, but not as a single step. Returns are accepted within 30 days on unworn pieces in their original packaging, and an exchange means getting the return approved, sending the piece back with the prepaid label we provide, and placing a new order. Custom and personalized pieces cannot be returned.
What is the safest gift for someone whose taste I am unsure about?
A small sterling silver stud in the finish they already wear. It is the piece most likely to go with everything they own, and the one least likely to sit in a drawer. Buy smaller than instinct tells you — most gift-buyers over-buy on size.
Where to start
If you want this decided in five minutes: pick a pair of studs in the finish they already wear, from the earrings collection. It is the one category with nothing to measure, the one our customers buy most, and the one you can give with confidence to someone whose ring size is a complete mystery. If you would rather give something with a little more presence, the pendants are the next safest step, and the bracelets after that.
