How to Buy Jewelry Online Safely: A 6-Point Checklist
September 22, 2026
Buying jewelry online is safe when the seller puts the important things in writing: what the metal is, what the stone grade means, whether the shipment is insured, what happens if the package never shows up, how long you have to send it back, and who fixes it when a prong lets go a year from now. If a site answers all six before you pay, the risk is low. If it answers none, the price is not what you should be worried about.
Most jewelry buying advice stops at the stone. This one is about the transaction. Below is the checklist, and next to each item, our own answer, so you can see what a straight answer looks like.
The short answer
Check these six things before you enter a card number:
- The metal is named specifically, not described as "silver tone" or left blank.
- The stone grade is explained as what it is, rather than implied to be something it is not.
- Shipping is tracked and insured, and the cost is stated before checkout.
- There is a written answer for lost, damaged and wrongly marked deliveries.
- There is a return window with plain conditions, and it says who pays the return postage.
- There is an after-sale guarantee that names what it covers and what it does not.
Any one of these missing is not automatically a scam. All six missing is a store that has not decided what it owes you.
1. Does the store name the metal, exactly?
This is the fastest filter there is. A real description names the alloy and says where it applies. A vague one uses words that sound like metal without being one: "silver tone", "white gold finish", "premium alloy".
Plated pieces are not the problem. Undisclosed plating is. Gold over sterling silver is a legitimate construction that wears at a predictable rate. Gold over brass is a different product at a different cost, and a store that will not say which it sells has told you something.
Our pieces are built on solid .925 sterling silver, including the posts and the backs, and the gold and rose gold colorways are plated over that same sterling base rather than over a cheaper metal. If you want the longer version of what that number means and what it does not promise, we wrote what .925 sterling silver actually means.

2. Is the stone grade explained, or just asserted?
Moissanite listings are full of grade language borrowed from diamonds. VVS, D-color, and so on. The vocabulary is real. What matters is who assigned it.
Moissanite is generally not certified stone by stone the way a fine diamond is. So when you see VVS and D-color on a moissanite listing, including ours, that is a manufacturer's specification for the grade of material used, not an independent laboratory report on the specific stone in the setting. A store that explains this is being accurate. A store that implies a diamond-style certificate sits behind the number is not, and that is worth noticing before you buy rather than after.
We go through the whole vocabulary in what VVS moissanite actually means, and if you want the version aimed at spotting a weak piece from photographs, what makes iced-out jewelry look real covers the tells.
3. Is the shipment tracked and insured?
Tracking and insurance are separate things, and stores often mention only the first. Tracking tells you where the parcel is. Insurance decides who absorbs the loss when the answer is "nowhere". For a piece worth a few hundred dollars, uninsured shipping means you carry the risk of a carrier error, which is not a risk you were quoted at checkout.
Standard shipping within the United States is free and fully insured on every order we send, with no minimum spend. US express shipping arrives in two business days and costs $19.99. International shipping is calculated at checkout and takes 5 to 14 business days, and on international orders any customs duties or import taxes are the recipient's responsibility, which is normal but is better known in advance than discovered at the door. Every order ships with full tracking, and the tracking number arrives by email. Allow 24 to 48 hours after dispatch for the carrier to start updating it, because a tracking number that shows nothing on day one is almost always just a scan that has not happened yet. The full terms are on our shipping policy page.
4. What happens if the package is lost, damaged, or marked delivered?
Almost nobody asks this before buying and almost everybody asks it afterward. The three failure modes are different, and a store that has thought about them has a different answer for each. Here is ours, stated the same way on our policy page:
- Lost in transit. We reship the order or issue a full refund.
- Damaged on arrival. Send us a photo and we replace it at no cost to you.
- Marked delivered but not received. Contact us within 7 days and we work with the carrier to investigate, then make it right with a replacement or a refund.
The seven-day window on the third is worth remembering, because that is where carrier evidence goes stale fastest. One note that applies to every store: check the shipping address at checkout, because once a parcel is moving, addresses generally cannot be changed.
5. Can you send it back, and who pays the postage?
A return window is only half the answer. The other half is the conditions, and the part stores are quietest about is who pays to ship it back. Free returns and free return shipping are not the same sentence.
Our window is 30 days. To be eligible, the piece needs to be unworn and unused, in original condition, in its original packaging with all included materials, and accompanied by proof of purchase. Returns are approved before they are sent, so the first step is an email to support@jamilahjewels.com rather than a parcel. Once a return is authorized we issue a prepaid label, and return shipping on approved returns is on us.
Three things that are genuinely worth reading before you order, because they are easy to miss:
- Earrings have a stricter condition than everything else, for hygiene reasons. They must be unworn and come back in their original packaging to be refundable.
- Custom and personalized pieces, sale items and gift cards are final sale and cannot be returned. That is standard for made-to-order work, and it is the reason a custom commission deserves more questions up front than a stock piece does.
- Original shipping charges are not refunded, and there is no exchange process as such. An exchange is a return plus a new order.
Refunds go back to the original payment method within 10 business days of approval. Our full refund policy has the complete terms.
6. What happens a year later, when something actually fails?
Jewelry does not usually fail on arrival. It fails in month eleven, when a prong gives up or a clasp stops closing properly. This is the only item on the checklist about the long run, and it is the one most stores leave as a vague promise of quality. The useful test is whether the guarantee names its exclusions: one that claims to cover everything was not written by anyone expecting to honor it.
Ours covers stone loss under normal wear, setting or prong failure, clasp failure, and plating wear from normal wear, with re-plating included. It does not cover loss, theft, or damage from an accident. Tarnish is specifically not treated as a defect, because all sterling silver tarnishes eventually and a polishing cloth reverses it in a minute. That distinction is not a technicality, it is the difference between a repair and a five-second fix you can do at home, and we go through it properly in our sterling silver care guide. Claims start with an email containing your order number and a photo. The written terms live on our lifetime guarantee page, alongside our verification promise: if a piece is ever not the material its product page says it is, you get a full refund.

So what actually arrives?
Putting the six together, here is the whole sequence for a standard US order, end to end.
| Stage | What happens | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| After checkout | Order confirmation by email | Immediately |
| Dispatch | Ships from our Los Angeles studio, Monday to Friday | Next business day |
| Tracking | Tracking number emailed, then carrier scans begin | 24 to 48 hours |
| Delivery | Standard, free and insured | 2 to 5 business days |
| Return window | Opens on arrival, unworn pieces | 30 days |
| Guarantee | Stone, setting, clasp and plating cover | Lifetime |
Custom and made-to-order pieces are the exception to the dispatch line, because they are built rather than picked. Our custom jewelry process guide explains how that runs.
Where to start if you have never ordered from us
The honest advice for any jeweler you have not used before is to start small and see how they behave. A stud earring is the natural first order: nothing to measure, and the fastest way to find out whether a store's photographs match what turns up.
Our 9mm cluster studs in silver at $140 and the Timeless Clover Elegance studs at $150 are the two we would point a first-time buyer at, and the Luxe Clover earrings start at $100. If you would rather browse the whole range, the earrings collection is the place, and our earrings buying guide covers style, size, stones and backs in detail.
If anything is still unclear, our FAQ page answers it in shorter form, and a real person replies to support@jamilahjewels.com the same business day.
You should not have to trust a stranger with a card number and hope. Read the terms, order the small thing first, and judge us on what turns up. Browse the earrings collection or the best sellers when you are ready.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to buy jewelry online?
Yes, when the seller states the terms before you pay. The six things worth confirming are the exact metal, how the stone grade was assigned, whether shipping is tracked and insured, what happens if a parcel is lost or damaged, the return window and who pays the return postage, and what an after-sale guarantee covers and excludes. A store that answers all six has decided what it owes you. A store that answers none has not.
What should I check before ordering from a jeweler I have never used?
Start with the metal description. A specific alloy named in writing, such as solid .925 sterling silver, tells you far more than any amount of marketing language, and vague terms like silver tone usually exist so the seller never has to say what is underneath. After that, read the shipping and returns pages rather than the homepage, because that is where the real commitments are.
What happens if my package is lost in the mail?
On a Jamilah Jewels order we reship it or refund you in full. If it arrives damaged, send us a photo and we replace it at no cost. If tracking says delivered and nothing arrived, contact us within 7 days and we investigate with the carrier, then resolve it with a replacement or a refund. Every order we send is tracked, and standard US shipping is fully insured.
Can I send a piece back if I change my mind?
Yes, within 30 days, as long as the piece is unworn and unused, in original condition, in its original packaging with all included materials, and you have proof of purchase. Email support@jamilahjewels.com first, because returns are approved before they are sent, and we issue a prepaid label. Earrings must be unworn to qualify, and custom pieces, sale items and gift cards are final sale.
How long after I pay does my order ship?
Stock pieces ship the next business day, Monday to Friday, from our Los Angeles studio. Standard US delivery then takes 2 to 5 business days, US express takes 2 business days, and international delivery takes 5 to 14 business days. Custom and made-to-order pieces are built rather than picked, so they need longer, and we confirm the timing once the design is agreed.
