In 1893, the French chemist Henri Moissan — who would go on to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry — was studying rock samples from the Canyon Diablo meteorite crater in Arizona. Inside them he found tiny, brilliantly sparkling crystals that he initially took for diamonds. They were not. Why you cannot buy natural moissanite
Natural moissanite turns up in exactly two kinds of places. The first is meteorite fragments, like the Canyon Diablo material Moissan studied. The second is a small number of unusual terrestrial rocks, where it appears as microscopic grains — occasionally even as tiny inclusions trapped inside other minerals, including inside diamonds.
In every known case the crystals are minuscule and thinly scattered. There is no seam, no deposit, no concentration of the mineral anywhere that would justify a shovel, let alone a mine. A quick honesty checklist, whoever you buy from:
