How to Wear a Pendant: A Men's Guide to Necklines and Layers
September 1, 2026
You bought the pendant. Now there is the part nobody explains: where it should actually sit, whether it goes over the shirt or under it, and what happens when you try to wear it with something you already own.
The short answer: pick the chain length that puts the pendant where you want it to land, wear it over the fabric rather than under it whenever the piece is stone set, and if you are layering, put the pendant on the longer of the two chains so it hangs clear. Everything below is the reasoning, plus the parts that change depending on what you are wearing.
This guide is about wearing a pendant you already own. If you are still deciding which one to buy, our moissanite pendant buying guide covers shape, scale and setting, and what chain to wear with a pendant works through bail clearance and chain width.
First, the thing that catches most people out
Our pendants are sold as pendants. They do not include a chain. Every pendant in the pendants collection carries a color option and nothing else, with one exception: the Custom Name Pendant, which comes with a tennis chain included.
So if you are reading this holding a pendant and no chain, that is normal, and the chains collection is the other half of the purchase. If you already have a chain you like, check that the pendant's bail actually clears its links before you commit to the pairing.
Start with where you want it to sit
Chain length is the only control you have over where a pendant lands on your chest, and it matters more than the pendant itself. Our size guide puts it plainly:
- 18 inches sits at the base of the neck, at or just above the collarbone. This is the classic length for pendants.
- 20 inches falls just below the collarbone. The size guide calls it the most versatile length for men and the most popular for layering.
- 22 inches falls at or just above the chest. Best for a statement drop, or for wearing over hoodies and crewnecks.
Two practical notes on that. First, those descriptions assume an average build, and a broader chest pulls the same chain length higher, so if you are between two lengths and you are heavier through the shoulders, size up rather than down. Second, a pendant adds its own drop below the chain. A short pendant on a 20 inch chain lands roughly where a longer pendant on an 18 inch chain does, which is why measuring a chain you already wear beats guessing.
Your neckline decides more than your outfit does
Men usually think about this as an outfit question. It is really a collar question. The same pendant on the same chain behaves completely differently depending on the shape of the opening it has to work with.
| Neckline | What happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Crew neck tee | The collar sits high and close, so a short chain disappears into it | Go 20 inches so the pendant clears the collar and reads on the fabric |
| V neck or open henley | The opening frames the pendant, which is the easiest case | 18 or 20 both work; 18 keeps it inside the V |
| Hoodie or crewneck sweatshirt | Thick fabric and a wide collar swallow a short chain | 22 inches over the top, per the size guide |
| Button down, open | The pendant sits against skin and moves with the shirt | 18 inches keeps it centered rather than swinging |
| Button down, closed | Anything long will bulge visibly under the placket | Wear it under, short, or leave it off |
The pattern is simple once you see it. Thicker fabric and wider collars need more length. Closer collars need less. If you own one chain and wear a mix of all five, 20 inches is the length that compromises least, which is exactly why the size guide names it.
Over the shirt or under it
Both are legitimate. The choice is usually made for you by the setting on the piece.
Over the fabric is the default for a stone set pendant, and not only because you want it seen. A pavé or prong set piece has dozens of small channels between the settings. Worn under a shirt all day, those channels collect lint, body oil and the fine fibers that come off a knit, and the stones go flat looking faster than they would otherwise. It is not damage and it cleans off easily, but it does mean the piece stops looking like the piece you bought. If you do wear it under a shirt, our guide on how to clean moissanite jewelry at home covers getting the settings clear again in a few minutes.
Under the fabric makes sense in three situations: a dress code that rules jewelry out, a closed collar where a chain over the top looks wrong, and any setting where you would rather not advertise a piece worth a few hundred dollars. Choose a shorter chain when you do it, because a long chain under a t shirt telegraphs its own outline every time you move.
What does not work is switching between the two several times a day. Pulling a stone set pendant in and out of a collar is the most reliable way to catch a prong on a knit. Decide before you leave.
Layering a pendant with a chain
Layering is where most men go wrong, and the fix is two rules rather than an eye for it.
Rule one, spacing. The size guide is specific: keep at least 2 inches between lengths, for example 18 and 20. Anything closer and the two chains ride on top of each other and read as one messy line rather than two deliberate ones.
Rule two, the pendant goes on the longer chain. This is the part the spacing rule does not tell you. A pendant hanging from the shorter chain lands directly on the longer one and the two fight all day. On the longer chain it drops below the shorter one and sits in clear space, which is what makes a layered look read as intentional.
Beyond that, keep one piece leading. If the pendant is the statement, the second chain should be quiet. If the chain is the statement, and something like the Rockstar Crown Spike Tennis Chain certainly is, wear it on its own. Two loud pieces on the same neckline cancel each other out. Our post on how to style a tennis chain takes the chain-led version of that further.
When to take it off
A stone set sterling pendant is built for daily wear, and it is not built for everything. The short version is that contact sports, the gym, the shower and sleep are all worth taking it off for, and the reasons are more about the setting and the chain than the stone. We cover this properly in can you wear moissanite every day, which goes through the shower, the gym and sleeping in it one at a time.
On the metal itself, sterling silver is a working material rather than a delicate one, and it does darken over time in air. That is tarnish, it is normal, and a polishing cloth reverses it. Our sterling silver durability guide covers what scratches, what polishes out and what does not. Worth knowing before you panic at the first dull patch: it is almost always tarnish rather than wear.
Three setups that work
Concrete versions of everything above, using pieces that are in stock as this is written.
The one that goes with everything. The 'Guided Path' Classic Star Pendant at $200 on a 20 inch chain. The star is a clean shape with no strong subculture read, it is light enough that you forget it is on, and 20 inches clears a crew neck without disappearing under a hoodie. If you only ever own one pendant, this is the safest version of the decision.
The one with more attitude. The 'Legacy Block' Trap House Pendant at $200, also on 20 inches, worn on its own over a plain tee. It carries more shape and more stone coverage than the star, so it wants a quiet chain under it and nothing else competing on the neckline.
The one that arrives complete. The Custom Name Pendant with a free tennis chain is the only pendant on the site that ships with its chain, which removes the pairing problem entirely. It is made to order, so treat it as a planned purchase rather than a quick one. Our guide to how the custom process actually works walks through the timeline.
Every one of those is solid .925 sterling silver set with VVS moissanite, and every one is covered by a lifetime guarantee covering stone loss, setting and clasp failure, and re-plating. Full terms are on the lifetime guarantee page.
Frequently asked questions
What chain length suits a man's build and neckline?
Twenty inches is the most versatile answer for most builds and most necklines. Eighteen sits at the base of the neck and works best with open collars and V necks. Twenty two is for wearing over a hoodie or a crewneck, or for a deliberate statement drop.
Should a pendant be worn over or under a shirt?
Over, in most cases, especially for a stone set piece. Fabric rubbing across a pavé or prong setting collects lint and body oil in the channels and dulls the look faster. Wear it under when a dress code or a closed collar requires it, and use a shorter chain when you do.
Can you layer a pendant with another chain?
Yes. Keep at least 2 inches between the two lengths, and hang the pendant from the longer chain so it drops clear of the shorter one. Keep one piece as the statement and the other quiet.
Do the pendants in this guide include a chain?
Not at Jamilah Jewels, with one exception. Our pendants are sold as pendants and the chain is a separate purchase. The Custom Name Pendant includes a tennis chain.
Can you sleep or shower in a moissanite pendant?
Better not to. Neither will destroy the stone, but soap film dulls the settings and a chain caught in bedding is how clasps fail. Our guide on wearing moissanite every day covers each case in detail.
Will a pendant look too small on a bigger frame?
It can. A broader chest also pulls a given chain length higher on the body, so if you are between sizes, go longer. If you want the pendant to read from across a room rather than up close, size the pendant up rather than only lengthening the chain.
Wearing yours
Most of what makes a pendant look right is decided before you put it on: the length you picked, the collar you are wearing it with and whether anything else is competing with it on the same neckline. Get those three right and the piece does the rest.
Browse the pendants collection to find the shape, and the chains collection for the length. If you are not sure whether a particular pendant and chain will pair, send us the two pieces through the contact page and we will tell you straight.
